May is National Bike Month, promoted by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to give biking a try.
To celebrate Charlottesville Bike Month in 2026, local businesses and groups teamed up with the city, along with Albemarle County and the University of Virginia, to offer a month-long series of events where people of all ages can learn about bike safety, practice skills, and simply get motivated to spend more time in the saddle.
The most successful Bike Month to date, 2026 saw:
1,355 bike trips logged through the Bike Month Business Challenge
1.82 tons of carbon emissions saved
300+ attendees at Family Bike Day
60+ riders at the BRC / CBC Bike Month Finale Ride

The Approach
Hive worked closely with the City of Charlottesville’s Neighborhood Development Services (NDS) office, who served as the aggregator for the month-long initiative.
Our goal was to create an inviting, welcoming and celebratory space for community members to learn about biking, spend more time in the saddle, and spread the joy of biking to others. We did this through multiple touch points, including email marketing, social media, website (events calendar, ride routes, resources, and local clubs), public relations (local / traditional media), and community outreach through local partners. We did all of this under the umbrella of the existing Bike C’ville brand.
